Walmart is desperately trying to enter NYC in order to expand its market share in urban centers. It is currently eyeing development sites throughout the city but has been met with intense opposition from elected officials, community organizations and residents who do not want the big-box store to bring low-wage jobs and force small businesses to close. After years of opposition, Walmart recently announced it will no longer pursue plans to open its doors in East New York, Brooklyn

Today's action at Valley Stream sheds light on Walmart's long history of illegal and discriminatory actions towards its employees and its failed promises to bring good jobs and economic revitalization to local communities.

For the first time in its 50-year history, Walmart is facing expanding strikes in its stores, warehouses and distribution centers. Last week, workers from over a dozen Los Angeles-area Walmart stores went on strike to protest the company's actions towards associates who speak out for better jobs. The take home pay of Walmart workers is so low, associates are often forced to rely on public benefits to support their families.

"Long Island, and communities throughout New York, need responsible businesses that will bring good-paying jobs and quality products to our residents. Unfortunately, Walmart continues to show that is more interested in profits than the concerns of its employees and customers," said Charlene Obernauer, Executive Director of Long Island Jobs with Justice.

"Today, we stand in solidarity with Walmart workers throughout the country who are calling on the retailer to end its illegal practice of retaliating against employees," said Stephanie Yazgi, spokeswoman for Walmart Free NYC. "Workers should not be silenced for wanting a safe work environment and decent wages."

Activists and community leaders nationwide visited over 650 Walmart stores today to urge the company to end its illegal actions, increase base level-pay and improve workplace safety protections.

It was part of a day of action that also saw workers from across the country travel to Bentonville, Arkansas, for Walmart's Annual Financial Analysts meeting to demand the retailer stop retaliating against workers who speak out about poor working conditions, low wages, lack of hours and understaffing.

Community leaders, workers and labor organizers today leafleted and spoke with residents outside the Valley Stream Walmart on Long Island, New York, and met with the store's manager to show support for Walmart workers in New York and throughout the country.
